Bristol and South Gloucestershire councils are leading on the Cycling City project, working with Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset councils to promote cycling across the region.
The Cycling City project provided a number of free cycling workstations to enable people to maintain and repair their bicycles for free at community hubs in Bristol.

Pop along to any of the locations listed below and, providing the location is open, you'll be able to access these tools for free (there will be a cost for parts though). Do contact the manager before you turn up to avoid disappointment.

The Kingswood Foundation is a centre of excellence for inspiring young people through arts based projects. Currently, they provide a base for 24 community organisations as well as providing lots of activities for children and young people. They have a policy of encouraging cycling and have invested in better cycling facilities (particularly secure cycle parking) and several cycle promotion events. A new project is to develop a base in Broadmead, Bristol called 'The Station'. When this opens, it will provide a central space for young people's organisations, including a bike workshop.

A citywide youth organisation that works in partnership with a range of agencies throughout the greater Bristol area. They offer opportunities for young people to develop their skills, achieve goals and build confidence.

Blenheim Scouts have a fleet of 20 bicycles and have been working with young people on cycling projects for over 7 years. They work with schools and clubs to teach basic bike maintenance as well as offering more advanced training to more experienced young people. Two of their leaders are bikeability trained.

A partnership project working with Streets Alive and Baggator. Organiser Kai Paulden and colleagues provide a bike maintenance service in Easton for people of all ages. It particularly targets the Easton community but is likely to catch considerable passing bike traffic from people living in Downend and Fishponds who use the Path to commute and for recreation.

Southmead Adventure Playground provide activities for local children between the ages of 6-13 years at their open access adventure playground site. There is strong support for cycling with play leaders, children and their parents engaged in a number of cycling activities including cycling training, maintenance and bike rides. Southmead has no bike shops in the area and many families are on a low income so getting bicycles fixed and maintained at the playground is one of the few ways the local community can stay on their bikes.

Bristol Bike Project works with a wide range of people to provide them with a bike and the skills to maintain them. Client groups include asylum seekers, refugees, recovering substance abusers, homeless people, people with mental health problems, the unemployed, women and vulnerable young people. Many of these people are on low incomes. The project provides an important means for people to get a bicycle which in turn plays a significant part in improving their mobility and reducing their social isolation.

St Werburghs Community Association work with local people on low incomes who struggle to keep their bicycles roadworthy and safe. Bicycle workshop sessions are offered on a regular basis based at either the Centre or other community venues. The workshops share skills and tips on routine maintenance to enable users to carry out small repairs for themselves.

Lawrence Weston Young Action is an umbrella group of smaller community groups working with young people in Lawrence Weston. The aim of the group is to improve outcomes for local young people, increase the voice and influence of local young people and to encourage multi-agency cooperation. Cycling projects have been very successful with young people. The project fits very well with the increasing cycling culture in Lawrence Weston including a very active BMX Club and the Barrowmead Project who organise family bike rides.

Baggator works with young people in the Easton area of Bristol. A regular, weekly bike club is offered working with a broad cross-cultural group including Somali, other African, Caribbean, Asian and White, many excluded from mainstream society. The main focus has been the provision of training and support for young people to rebuild second hand bikes in a supported environment, bikes which they can then keep and use as a form of transport. Bike Ride and BMX skills sessions have also been run.
